The Moorabool Shire - is a semi-rural municipality, covering a geographical area of 2,112 square kilometres, located 80km immediately to the west of the Melbourne metropolitan area. Moorabool Shire is projected to be the third fastest growing exurban area in Victoria (source: Victoria in Future Overview, 2000). It is traversed by a nationally significant transport route and is within easy access to Melbourne and the two major regional centres of Ballarat and Geelong. Over twenty distinct communities constitute the Shire. This includes the majority of the population centred in and around Bacchus Marsh. Each community displays a high level of local identity and self-determination. A diverse and important range of environmental and natural resources add to the economic prosperity of the Municipality. Coal, clay, mineral and stone deposits, large forested areas and five major catchment areas including large water storage areas and rivers provide opportunity for growth. |
